The spark plug then ignites the mixture, driving the cylinder down and turning the crankshaft to control the transmission and turn the wheels.

In a diesel engine, air is allowed into the cylinder, by the piston upto to 14 to 25 times its volume. Fuel is injected from an electronic fuel-injectionsystem, into this hot and highly compressed air to ignite and cause a small explosion. This explosion pushes the piston down and thus turns the wheel similar to a petrol engine. The basic principle remains the same in both the engines, but a spark plug is used in one and Fuel-injector in the other.

Another evident difference is in the kind of fuel utilized in the two engines. Because of the working principles as explained above, lower amounts of diesel is needed to generate the same amount of power as compared to a petrol engine. This is because in apetrol engine, the fuel and air mixture is compressed, which consumes more fuel.

Horsepower and torque is another area where these two engines differ, and it might be the most important for your comparison purposes. Diesel engines have a larger amount of torque, which is the thing that gets the vehicle moving, particularly with heavy loads. Gas motors are better at strength, which rev up higher.

Both types of engines differ in performance in view of the manufacturer and exact specifications, so it’s best to compare specs on the engine when you’re choosing which vehicle to purchase.
