Suzuki Motorcycles – History
Suzuki in India is registered under the corporate entity name of Suzuki Motorcycles India Pvt. Ltd (SMIPL). Suzuki, the Japanese based manufacturing brand has made a revolution in Indian automobile industry. There are two strategic partnerships of this company, in India, that brought about this transformation. First, being Maruti-Suzuki (for four wheelers) and the other TVS-Suzuki (for two-wheelers). TVS and Suzuki had a 19year long relationship in which they collaborated to manufacture two-wheelers in India. The technological know-how from Suzuki and the indigenization from TVS. The collaborative entity reformed the two-wheeler market and technologies by their innovations and many first for indigenous development. Read more about TVS here.
In 2001, the two companies parted ways, with Suzuki having an agreement with TVS, to not enter the India market with two-wheelers, for 3years. Post this, in 2006, the entity SMIPL was setup in Gurgaon and marked the entry of two-wheelers. The company has a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility at Gurgaon in India. They have 5 motorbike models and two scooter models which have been launched for the Indian market. They also have 7 big bikes (details of which are below), and are also into manufacturing and sales of ATV’s.
Suzuki is known for their technological superiority. The ‘Suzuki Eco-performance’ (SEP) is a new developmental concept proposed by Suzuki. As quoted by Suzuki “’SEP’ stands for our next-generation engine that offers both low fuel consumption and superior acceleration. Suzuki sets higher standards for environmental performance in both fuel consumption and emission… but we never compromise riding performance.”[i]
