Honda was the eighth largest automobile manufacturer in the world behind Toyota, Volkswagen Group, Hyundai Motor Group, General Motors, Ford, Nissan, and FIAT in 2015[2]. In 1960, Honda entered the US market while still being a small manufacturer. The story of their market entry into new market already occupied by highly dominant competitors, and their subsequent huge success in the U.S. and around the world, has been the subject of some academic controversy. Competing explanations from BCG (Boston Consulting Group), Richard Pascale, and Gary Hamel and CK Pahlad[3], have been studied to explain Honda’s strategy and the reasons for their success. Derived from the concept of core competencies with Honda as an example, the most relevant and logical explanation detailed that Honda’s success was due to its focus on leadership in the technology of internal combustion engines. This is evident because Honda is the world’s largest manufacturer of internal combustion engines measured by volume, producing more than 14 million internal combustion engines each year[4].
